Our Answer to Insurrection

Good morning, dear Activists;

Yesterday was one of the worst days in the history of this country; a day that will live in infamy.

What we witnessed was a violent insurrection intended to overturn our democratically elected government, chosen by the people. And this isn’t being done by some splinter faction: the President of the United States encouraged the thugs storming the Capitol.

But we know how to get the change we seek. We worked our tails off to get another president, one who would make us better and move us forward. And we worked our tails off to take back the Senate. And you know what – we did it. And we’ll do it again now to save our country.

The bottom line is that the House must act quickly to introduce new Articles of Impeachment. And the Senate must hold a trial and remove Trump from office and then vote to disqualify him from ever holding federal office again.

It may feel weird to impeach and remove just weeks before Trump’s term ends. But we simply can’t just wait for Trump to leave office as his threat to our democracy continues. Three important points here:

1. In the wake of the coup attempt at the Capitol, Republicans must be forced to face an explicit choice as to whether or not they will fully and completely reject Trump and Trumpism and ensure that he can never hold elected office again. Impeaching and convicting him is the first step toward reversing the tide of violence – at the Capitol, in Georgia, in Kansas, and elsewhere – that he has directly incited.

2. It's also crucial that the House and Senate send a strong message that the United States will not tolerate attempts to usurp democracy, now or ever. If we react with anything less than impeachment and removal, it sends a message to future wannabe authoritarians, following the Trump blueprint, that their plans can succeed if they rally a big enough mob.

3. In addition, we’re calling on the Senate not just to convict Trump but to disqualify him -- and that’s an additional vote that would ensure he can never hold federal office again. We already know he’s planning to try in 2024 and disqualification would ensure he can’t.

Here is a good article explaining the theory of the case as well.

Removing Trump from office and ensuring he’ll never return won’t end Trumpism – we’ll have a lot more work to do on that. But it is one important piece of the puzzle, and after yesterday it’s clear how absolutely essential it is. Impeaching and convicting him is the first step toward reversing the tide of violence, insurrection, and white supremacist terror that he has incited, at the Capitol and beyond.

So let’s get to it. This is no ordinary Call To Action.

First, make the calls yourself. Not later – NOW. Set down your cup of coffee or tea; take a quick break from reading more of the news. CALL NOW. And then, tell every one of your like-minded friends and relatives wherever they live. Tell them to call too. They can find their Senators and Representatives below. We need EVERY person to make the calls today. And make them again tomorrow. Remember it only takes a minute for each call. Multiple numbers are listed below; and if all the voicemails are full, send an email at the links below.

Tell our elected officials they must impeach, remove, and vote to disqualify without delay.
