Our New Climate Group Is Here!

Happy Tuesday, Activists!

This is an exciting week and we have a lot for you to do in making a difference in our world.   Last week I told you about our beautiful new website.  This week we at Indivisible Philadelphia HQ want to announce that we have a new team within Indivisible Philadelphia.  It’s a Climate Change-focused group, which is very exciting.  They provide research-based  resources, presentations, and programs that help people to understand the climate crisis and take effective action to combat it. They have prepared presentations to take place in homes and public locations for all sizes of groups.  See it all here on our website and we'll have more info soon

Today we have a climate change CTA for local action so check it out below and make a call!

DID YOU KNOW?

We were featured on Rachel Maddow!  Our recent Impeach & Remove Rally was featured on The Rachel Maddow Show and here is the link to the video on Twitter from the show.  Our Social Media lead, Matt, did a great job communicating with the show beforehand and then sent them the video from the rally.  And then it was up that night on the show, spreading our message!  Thanks Matt!

CALLS TO ACTION

Two Calls To Action this week – one national and one local.  Remember you can call on the same issue on more than one day, so keep up the pressure!

Sen. Toomey – Phila office 215-241-1090; D.C. office 202-224-4254; email link Sen. Casey – Phila office 215-405-9660; D.C. office 202-224-6324; email link

Impeachment – Demand A Fair Trial

Call our Senators and tell them you want a fair trial with witnesses.

For Casey, demand that he speak out loudly and firmly about the need for a fair and open impeachment trial in the Senate.

For Toomey, remind him of the oath he took to support and defend the Constitution and demand he supports a fair and open trial in the Senate to fully hear the evidence and hold Trump accountable for his actions.  If he doesn’t he’ll become an accomplice in Trump’s coverup.

This isn’t over until the votes are cast -- your voice could be the one to tip the scales.

Call Mayor Kenney: Keep the Refinery Closed

Make calls to keep the PES oil refinery from being sold to another polluting company.

The year 2020 is a pivotal one for our communities and the planet. In Philadelphia, we have the chance to begin the year by keeping the largest polluter in the city shut down for good. To do this, we need to show undeniable public resistance to the refinery reopening and keep the pressure on Mayor Kenney to use his power.

Philadelphia residents are locked out of the refinery’s auction process, but the City of Philadelphia has a seat at the table as our representative. Mayor Kenney has the opportunity of his career to stand up for the health of workers, residents, and the planet by keeping the refinery from being sold to another polluter- let’s make sure he knows it!

Call Mayor Kenney’s Office THIS WEEK – 215-686-2181

Here’s your script:   Hi, this is _______ and I live in Philadelphia.  I am calling with a message for Mayor Kenney. Residents are relying on the City to represent us when it comes to the future of the PES oil refinery. We need your administration to make it clear throughout the auction process that the City of Philadelphia can no longer host polluting companies on that land.  To do so would go against City priorities and investments in public health, safety, and combating climate change.  I look forward to seeing legislation your office is preparing to protect our Right To Breathe. Thank you.

People for Puerto Rico Rally

Release The $18B In Aid For Puerto Rico

Congress has appropriated $18 billion in aid for Puerto Rico to upgrade its infrastructure, including the electrical grids, and rebuilding homes, businesses and bridges in a stronger manner.  Without citing a valid reason, HUD has delayed the release of this critical aid.   Puerto Rico deserves better. On January 15, allies in cities across the country are protesting outside of HUD offices demanding the release of this aid, and to say anything less is unacceptable.

When:  Tomorrow, January 15th, 4:00 – 6:00 PM Where: HUD Office, 100 Penn Square East (6 So. Juniper St), Philadelphia, 19107 More info here on Facebook

POSTCARDS

This week we’ll be writing to local voters on behalf of Nancy Guenst, running to unseat the Republican incumbent in House District 152, which spans parts of Montgomery County and Philadelphia.

We’re also writing to voters in Florida to remind them to sign up to Vote By Mail (VBM).  Here’s the math part – the data show that for frequent Dem voters, those using VBM are 5% MORE likely to cast their ballots than non-VBM ones. Among less-frequent voters, the increase among VBM voters was 34%, and for infrequent voters the VBM turnout was 174% higher than the non-VBM voters!  Finally, among brand new registered Dem voters with no past history, when they voted by mail they were 47% more likely to do so than their non-VBM peers.  These numbers show why we do this work.

All you do is come with your writing hand and good humor.  And bring a friend!  If you sign up and then find you can’t make itplease email us and let us know.  We depend on having the right count! If you can, bring $5.00 to help defray the cost of postcards.
