Happy Tuesday, Activists!
We hope you're staying healthy and safe - and warm.
We’re finally coming up to the day for Senators to put their positions on the record and vote Yes or No for voting rights. Here is the latest in Sen. Schumer’s playbook: Last week, he vowed to hold a vote on democracy reform and the filibuster by Martin Luther King Day – next Monday. It’s likely that sometime before Monday, there will be another failed Motion to Proceed on the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. Then, we think Schumer will bring a motion to change or eliminate the filibuster (details still TBD) that would allow these bills to pass with a simple majority (i.e., actual democracy), rather than a supermajority (i.e., allowing the GOP to block even the most popular bills). There likely will be debate on that rules change, culminating in a final vote on filibuster reform next Monday, January 17. If we win that filibuster reform vote, we can finally have an up-or-down vote on the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act. We are following the call to action presented to us by the King family. This weekend, communities across the country will mark MLK Day and raise our voices to demand our elected officials pass the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, without letting outdated Senate loopholes get in the way. We have two ways you can take action with us – both of them are inside, out of this cold weather! FIRST -- MAKE THE CALLS! ALL EYES TURN TO FILIBUSTER VOTES ON MLK DAY You’ve been working so hard for so long (remember our Let Freedom Ring Rally in June and our rally in July when President Biden spoke at the Constitution Center? And our Time to Act rally in November?). It’s been a while! Now, we have just a little longer to keep up the pressure until we get an answer. Here are the calls to make: Sen. Casey – Phila office 215-405-9660; D.C. 202-224-6324; email link 1. Call Senator Casey Happy Tuesday, Activists! We hope you're staying healthy and safe - and warm.
