"Overwhelm is a normal feeling during uncertain times. The answer isn’t to do everything — it’s to do something. Pick the area you can act in, and then act in that area. Democracy is built from our small, steady acts."

~ Timothy Snyder, January 19, 2026

Happy Tuesday, Activists!

We hope you had a great weekend.  And now, on to relieving our anxiety!

As Professor Snyder tells us above, if we each pick something we want to do, something that works for us, and take those "small, steady acts", then we'll help rebuild our democracy.  And we're sure here for that!

We have many things below for you to pick from and we'll have more and more as we move forward toward November 3rd and beyond.  For example, we'll announce our canvasses soon.  But see below and see what works for you.  We promise - it will relieve your anxiety!

TONIGHT - JOIN OUR ELECTION PROTECTION MEETING!

We know that many folks, and many of you, are very anxious about the upcoming election and whether our votes will count, whether ICE will show up at the polls, or anything else that might affect our votes.

Tonight we have help!  You can join our super interesting and helpful meeting tonight at 6:00 pm on Zoom.  The event will feature Jake Sternberger, a voter protection attorney based in Philadelphia. Previously, he was a consumer protection lawyer.  He is a lifelong Pennsylvanian who has worked on campaigns from the local to statewide to national level.  He is now working with the PA Dems on voter protection.

Jake will (1) explain PA election laws, (2) describe what the PA Dems are doing to protect our November election and (3) what we can do to help.

This is an important meeting at an important time so don't miss it!  It will not be recorded.

Where:  Zoom

When:  Tuesday, September 1, 6:00 pm

HERE'S HOW YOU CAN HELP SECURE THE VOTE

We all need to do our part!  So many roles to fill!

SIGN UP TO BE A POLL OBSERVER

Poll Observers are the eyes and ears on the ground at polling places across the state on election day. They assist voters and ensure that every eligible voter can cast a ballot.  The PA Dems Voter Protection Team will train, assign, and support you to make sure that you are as effective as possible on Election Day.  Sign up here with the PA Dems for the training and to learn more.

JOIN THE PA DEMS VOTER ASSISTANCE TRAINING

This virtual session is required for anyone volunteering with one or more of the following PA Dems Voter Protection programs: Voter Assistance Hotline, Voter Assistance Textline, Ballot Cure.  Sign up to help make sure voters get their ballots counted!

When:  Sundays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, at various times.

Sign up here.

MORE FROM THE PA DEMS:

Election Office Monitor Trainings

As an Election Office Monitor, you will be an outside observer of county election office locations during mail ballot voting to gather information about office procedures, monitor for issues, assist voters, and report observations to PA Dems staff for follow up and resolution. This role requires attending one 60-minute virtual training.** This year, we expect more satellite election offices and a greater interest in over-the-counter voting. EOMs will play a crucial role in protecting the earliest stage of the process. Shifts for this role are allotted in 4 hour increments.  Sign up here.

Canvass Observer Trainings beginning on September 16

As a Canvass Observer, you will help ensure every vote is counted by monitoring the pre-canvassing and canvassing of ballots, providing progress updates, and reporting any irregularities to the Voter Protection Team. This role requires attending one 60 minute virtual training.** Shifts for this role are allotted in 6 hour increments.

Sign up here.

Volunteer Recruiters Right Now!

Help us call prospective volunteers to encourage them to get involved. These are the friendliest phone banks ever. We are reaching out to prior volunteers to help them re-engage. We will train and support you as you make calls. Sign up here.

HELP VOTERS CURE THEIR BALLOTS - Counties outside Philly

Every single vote matters in this year's elections.  You will be canvassing Democratic voters whose mail ballot has an error, and therefore, their vote will not count without intervention

The focus in this campaign is flippable districts so canvassing will be in the counties surrounding Philadelphia but not in the city itself. You choose the county(ies) where you would like to help.

Every canvasser will have an easily accessible live support system at all times, and of course you can go with a partner.

Canvassing takes place in October, after the online training in September/October.  The zoom training is less than an hour.  Sign up here.

REGISTER VOTERS!

SAVE THE DATE

HEAR FROM SUFFS CREATOR AND STAR SHAINA TAUB!

This is exciting news!  We are thrilled to announce this today because it's the anniversary of the certification of the Nineteenth Amendment, giving all U.S. women the right to vote. --  August 26, 1920.

Here's the exciting part:  Shaina Taub, the brilliant creator and star of the musical SUFFS, which describes the women's suffrage movement, will join us on zoom to answer our questions about her and her show.  And it is quite a story!  The show is exhilarating and inspiring and parallels much of what we are going through now - and shows what our activism has brought and can bring again this year.

This is an in-person meeting for us and we are still working on the location.  We will watch Shaina on zoom together and you'll be able to submit questions.  You won't want to miss this!  We are making this a fundraiser too for our work for the elections.  We'll have some hors d'oeuvres and adult and kids beverages, plus some of the music from the show and some video clips too.  More details soon!

To get you started, you can watch the recording of the Broadway show on PBS Great Performances (on Passport) if you support PBS.  Enjoy!

When:  October 28, 5:30 pm

Where:  The location is to be determined.

We will have the signup once we have the location.
